Peter Luccin Reflects on Rolland Courbis’s Motivational Impact

Peter Luccin, former midfielder for Girondins de Bordeaux and Olympique de Marseille, and currently a coach with FC Dallas, has shared his recollections of his former coach, Rolland Courbis. Luccin emphasized Courbis’s exceptional ability to motivate players and foster a strong team spirit.

The Power of People Management

Luccin highlighted the importance of effective people management in coaching, stating that Courbis was an expert in this area. He described Courbis as an “extraordinary motivator” whose words, demeanor, and energy consistently resonated with players.

“He didn’t need to talk with me about too many tactics, I was motivated, I knew more or less what I had to do,” Luccin explained.

Pre-Match Motivation Techniques

Luccin recalled Courbis’s impactful pre-match talks, which often lasted between 90 minutes and two hours. These sessions weren’t focused on tactical details but on inspiring the team, particularly by addressing opposing players, and teams.

“He had an ease in transcending us, especially against the opposing player and against an opposing team so he knew how to motivate us, to pull us out a little,” Luccin said. “Sometimes, it could be phrases that the players opposite might have said. He had a way of talking about certain opposing players who were having good times, anecdotes. It wasn’t making fun of us, but he knew how to transcend us against certain players who were key players. He knew very well that we had to shut down these players so that the other team wouldn’t develop their game.”

Rolland Courbis’s Legacy

Rolland Courbis passed away on January 12, 2026, at the age of 72. He is remembered for his significant contributions to French football, including bringing Zinedine Zidane to Girondins de Bordeaux. Courbis also coached Toulouse FC and Olympique de Marseille.

Peter Luccin’s reflections underscore Courbis’s lasting impact on the players he coached and his ability to inspire peak performance through motivational leadership.
