Peter Moore, born circa 1945 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is a distinguished figure who excelled as an international badminton player before transitioning to a successful career in the tourism industry. A three-time Irish champion, Moore represented Northern Ireland at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games and later received an OBE for his contributions to tourism.
Early Life and Badminton Career
Moore began his badminton journey playing for Christ Church BC, later joining Ballymacarrett BC in East Belfast in December 1967.1 While primarily a singles player, he demonstrated proficiency in doubles, partnering with players such as John McCloy, Adrian Bell, Ronnie Reddick, and Sammy Blair.3
Commonwealth Games and National Success
Moore represented Northern Ireland at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland, competing in both singles and doubles events.7, 8 In the doubles competition, alongside John McCloy, they were defeated by the eventual finalists, Ng Tat Wai and Tan Soon Hooi of Malaysia.9
He achieved national recognition as Ireland’s number one ranked player in 1971 and 1972.10 Moore secured three Irish National Badminton Championships titles: singles in 1969 and 1972, and doubles with Ronnie Reddick in 1971.11
Transition to Tourism and Recognition
After concluding his competitive badminton career, Moore transitioned to the leisure industry, working with Alton Towers and subsequently Center Parcs UK and Ireland.13 In 1996, he was awarded an OBE for his dedicated service to the tourism sector.13
Early Career and Team Management
Prior to his success as a player, Moore was a school teacher based in Carrickfergus.4 He also served as the team manager for the Irish U18 squad in 1979.12
