Phoenix to Reinstate Traffic Enforcement Cameras Amid Rising Road Safety Concerns

Phoenix is bringing back traffic enforcement cameras in an effort to curb speeding and reduce collisions, following City Council approval of a $12 million contract. The move comes as the city grapples with a concerning increase in serious injury and fatality collisions.

According to a statement by a city official, there is a “commitment here both in the department and city-wide to be more cognizant of the safety concerns that exist on our roads,” and “The number of serious injury and fatality collisions have prompted a need to do more to address the problem.”

The city’s Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan guides these efforts. Photo safety cameras are intended as a key component, proven to slow speeds and prevent accidents.

While speed cameras are being reinstated, red light cameras have also been approved for return, though a timeline for their implementation has not yet been announced.

The following locations have been identified for the initial deployment of speed cameras:

* Thunderbird Road: 35th Avenue to Interstate 17
* 32nd Street: Greenway Parkway to Bell Road
* Thunderbird Road: Interstate 17 to 19th Avenue
* 7th Street: Thomas Road to Indian school Road
* Indian School Road: 83rd Avenue to 75th Avenue
* camelback road: 24th Street to 32nd Street
* 51st Avenue: Van Buren Street to Interstate 10
* Baseline Road: 16th Street to 24th Street
* Bell Road: Interstate 17 to 19th Avenue
