WSL Photographer Bitten During New Zealand Pro Contest, Event Temporarily Halted
During the semi-final clash between Yago Dora and Italo Ferreira at the New Zealand Pro Championship Tour event in Manu Bay, Raglan, WSL water photographer Ed Sloane faced an unexpected ordeal. While capturing images for the event, Sloane was bitten on the ankle in the water, prompting organizers to halt competition temporarily under “code red” protocol, typically reserved for shark attacks.
According to reports from the Manu Bay boatramp, Sloane sustained puncture marks on his ankle, with his wetsuit flipper ripped off. The incident occurred on May 25, 2026 and organizers sounded the horn to clear the water, leading to a three-hour pause in the event. “The last few shots I took before something thought they’d see how I went for breakfast + the aftermath sorry,” Sloane wrote in a social media update, sharing images of his injuries from the hospital. He expressed gratitude to the WSL staff, medical team, and water patrol for their “professional response.”
Commentators and witnesses initially remained uncertain about the cause of the bite. However, subsequent analysis suggested the attacker could be a sevengill shark, a species frequently linked to unprovoked bites in New Zealand. “Their bites are typically non-fatal and usually result from the shark investigating its surroundings in shallow waters,” according to Wikipedia. Seal interactions, while more common, are generally less severe. Sloane’s account described the incident as “nightmare fuel,” noting the attack came “directly below” him.
Despite the setback, competition resumed after discussions among WSL staff and surfers. Carissa Moore, who returned to competition after giving birth, and Italo Ferreira emerged as winners. Sloane, a veteran photographer with decades of experience, plans to return to the water once recovered. “Thank you also to the Raglan township for sharing this beautiful spot, planning a family trip here to find my mate,” he added in his update.
The WSL confirmed the incident triggered standard safety protocols, emphasizing the priority of athlete and staff safety. No further details on Sloane’s condition were disclosed beyond his hospital update.
