Production Scale and Line Specifications

The facility deployment incorporates 78 distinct process stations, 27 robotic cells, and 46 industrial robots, according to project documentation cited by Robotics 247. Trial runs for the fully integrated manufacturing layout are scheduled to begin next year. The production sequence requires the system to assemble EV gearboxes before merging those transmissions with electric motors to yield complete E-Drive assemblies.

Electric powertrain manufacturing demands strict synchronization between automation hardware, quality monitoring systems, and software platforms. The Steyr line addresses this by executing several core manufacturing requirements simultaneously:

This virtual commissioning stage allowed engineers to isolate spatial conflicts and operational bottlenecks early in the development cycle.

The manufacturing process relies on specialized robotic hardware at critical stages. In the transmission assembly zone, three distinct gears mesh inside the housing under automated control. Automated changeover grippers enable the system to switch between transmission variants dynamically without manual retooling, preserving steady cycle times. At the final integration stage, a robotic “marriage” cell uses 12 synchronized screwdrivers to fasten the transmission and electric motor simultaneously, ensuring consistent clamp loads for every unit.

Quality Assurance and Software Integration

Every completed E-Drive unit receives a digital footprint containing torque parameters, tightening angles, and force-displacement curves.
