Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ Moment Nearly Cut Due to Disney Concerns
Pixar’s latest animated film, Hoppers, released in the United States on March 6, 2026, has been praised for its humor, heart, and surprising narrative choices. A particularly bold scene early in the film almost didn’t make the cut due to concerns from studio executives, according to director Daniel Chong.
The Shocking Scene Involving the Insect Queen
The scene in question involves Mabel Tanaka, a human whose consciousness has been transferred into a robotic beaver, instinctively squishing the Insect Queen, a character voiced by Meryl Streep, between her hands. Chong initially anticipated the need to alter the scene, preparing a less impactful version where the Queen dies on her own, with Mabel and King George appearing responsible but not directly causing her death.
Pete Docter and Andrew Stanton Champion the Scene
However, Chong’s concerns were dismissed by Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter (director of Up, Inside Out, and Monsters, Inc.) and Andrew Stanton (director of Finding Nemo, WALL-E, and Toy Story 5). Both directors strongly advocated for retaining the original, more violent and comedic moment. Chong recounted that Docter and Stanton questioned why the scene had been changed, emphasizing that it was a crucial element of what made Hoppers unique.
