Pixel Journal Gains Enhanced Customization and Media Features

Google is refining the Pixel Journal app with a series of updates focused on user customization and improved media handling. The latest developments, revealed through an APK teardown, suggest greater control over reminders, more versatile image and video layouts, and an enhanced viewing experience.

More Control Over Journaling Reminders

Currently, Pixel Journal offers reminders to encourage regular entries, but lacks granular control over timing. The upcoming update aims to address this, allowing users to specify when they receive these prompts – choosing options like morning, afternoon, or evening. Android Authority reports that these customizable reminder controls are currently in development.

Enhanced Media Layouts

The app is also experimenting with recent ways to display images and videos within journal entries. Users will soon have more options beyond the existing carousel view. These include:

  • Compact Grid View: A layout that displays multiple images in a grid format.
  • “Show All” Gallery View: A dedicated gallery view for entries containing numerous images.

Full-Screen Video Playback

To improve the viewing experience, Pixel Journal is adding support for full-screen video playback. This will allow users to watch videos directly within the app without the constraints of a smaller embedded player. Android Authority indicates this feature is also in testing.

Pixel Journal Availability and Features

The Journal app is currently available on Pixel 8 and later phones. It allows users to document their thoughts, feelings, and daily experiences, integrating with Photos, Maps, and health data to enrich entries. AI-powered features, such as Reflections, Revisit Topics, and Mood ID, are available on Pixel 10 and later phones. The app prioritizes user privacy, keeping entries private by default and not using personal content to train AI models. Google emphasizes that the app is a personal journaling tool and not a substitute for professional mental health care.

Getting Started with Pixel Journal

New Pixel 10 users can discover the Journal app in their app drawer. Upon launching, users are prompted to select a journaling goal and can link the app to other Google services like Photos and Health Connect. Cloud backup and PIN protection are also available options. Android Central provides a guide to setting up and using the app.
