Denial From Reminga Amid Hacking Claims
The controversy centers on a social media comment left on a post regarding Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud speaking at a city meeting, as documented by WXMI. When confronted at his home by local reporters prior to a special township board meeting, Reminga acknowledged the Facebook page belonged to him but denied creating the offensive content.
“I didn’t make it, but what it is is, I was told by one of my tech tech friends that ‘change your password, man, you’ve been hacked’,” Reminga stated to WXMI, adding that his wife, Lorrie, also disputes that he made the post.
Packed Public Meeting and Direct Outrage
During a packed special meeting on Friday, dozens of local residents filled the Plainfield Township meeting room to capacity to voice their outrage. According to coverage from WXMI, community members openly criticized Reminga during public comment periods.
Vietnam veteran James Stover addressed the trustee directly during the session, stating, according to WXMI: “I don’t know your background, but I’m asking you to resign. I didn’t go to Vietnam so you could be a bigot.” Other residents echoed those sentiments, calling the incident a tremendous embarrassment for everyone.
Board Censure and Legal Limitations
The Plainfield Township Board subsequently voted 4–1 to censure Reminga, with Reminga casting the lone dissenting vote. Township Supervisor Tom Coleman stated during the meeting that officials utilized all available administrative tools to address the incident.
Under Michigan law, however, the local township board lacks the legal authority to remove an elected trustee from office. Consequently, the board formally urged Reminga to step down voluntarily.
Refusal to Step Down Sparks Recall Plans
Reminga has repeatedly refused to vacate his elected position, telling attendees at the Friday meeting that critics would need to vote him out if they wanted him gone.
“I’m not going to resign. If the will of the people {is to} vote me out. Then vote me out,” Reminga said, as reported by WXMI. As public comments continued, Reminga walked out of the meeting room, telling reporters he needed to return to work.
In response to Reminga’s refusal to resign, local organizers have initiated steps to remove him via a public election. Petition strategist Joe Spaulding outlined plans for a recall effort during the Friday meeting, noting that signature collection efforts would target the statutory window following the winter months. Several residents at the meeting confirmed they would actively support the recall petition to unseat Reminga from the Plainfield Township Board.
