PlayStation Portal Receives Update with 1080p High Quality Mode and UX Refinements

PlayStation Portal users are receiving a recent system software update, rolling out globally starting March 18, 2026, that introduces a 1080p High Quality mode for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. This update aims to enhance the visual fidelity and overall user experience of the handheld gaming device.

1080p High Quality Mode

The new 1080p High Quality mode allows players to stream games at a higher bitrate compared to the default 1080p Standard mode, resulting in a smoother and more detailed visual experience. To enable this mode, users can navigate to Quick Menu > Max Resolution and select “1080p High Quality” during Remote Play or Cloud Streaming sessions. A restart of the session is required for the change to take effect. PlayStation announced the feature on March 17, 2026.

Refined Cloud Streaming Experience

Beyond the visual upgrade, the update includes several enhancements to improve usability and reduce friction during Cloud Streaming sessions. IGN reports that the search and product-detail pages within Cloud Streaming have been streamlined.

Improved Usability and Setup

Sony is also focusing on improving the overall usability of the PlayStation Portal. The update streamlines the onboarding process for new users, offering the option to sign in to their PlayStation account by scanning a QR code with their mobile device, reducing setup time. Polygon highlights this as a key improvement. Notifications for game invites and trophy unlocks have also been improved, providing clearer on-screen alerts. Platinum trophy unlocks now trigger an animated notification.

Growing PlayStation Portal User Base

According to Takuro Fushimi, Senior Manager, Product Management at PlayStation, the PlayStation Portal has seen significant growth since its launch. Cloud Streaming monthly users grew by 162% year-over-year in January and over 50% of PS Portal users are now PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. PlayStation reports this demonstrates increasing engagement with the cloud gaming experience.
