Pluto’s Rapid Rise: From Atlanta Cosmetologist to Rap Star

Pluto, born Jada Smith, has experienced a meteoric rise in the rap world over the past year, fueled by viral success and a savvy understanding of the music industry. From building a clientele as a cosmetologist in Atlanta to signing with Motown Records, her journey is a testament to hard work and recognizing opportunities.

Early Life and Hustle

Growing up in Atlanta, Pluto attended upwards of ten elementary schools before her family settled on the West Side when she was in fifth grade. She later enrolled at Booker T. Washington High School, graduating in 2022. While in high school, she discovered a talent for hairstyling and quickly built a successful business, supported by her godmother. She also worked as an athletic trainer during her high school years.

The Birth of a Rapper

Pluto’s path to music wasn’t immediate. Her mother, who studied music, instilled a love for it from a young age, noting Pluto’s apparent connection to music even as a baby. After high school, she began creating music with friends as a hobby, eventually leading to a dedicated pursuit of a rap career. She credits her mother with encouraging her to record and pursue her musical ambitions.

“Whim Whammie” and Viral Fame

Pluto’s breakthrough came with the release of “Whim Whammie,” featuring YK Niece, in February 2025. The Zaytoven, Mikey and Jai-produced track gained traction on TikTok, with a video of Pluto and YK Niece dancing in the snow helping to propel it to viral status. The song samples DJ Cool Breeze and OJ Da Juiceman’s “Wham Bam,” which references D4L rapper Mook B’s “Whim Wham.”

The song’s success led to a record deal with Motown Records in March 2025. Pluto described the deal as “divine intervention,” noting the positive connection she felt with the A&R team from the first conversation.

Albums and Collaborations

Within four months of signing with Motown, Pluto released two albums: Both Ways and Pluto World. Both Ways included a remix of “Whim Whammie” featuring Sexyy Red. Pluto World, released in October 2025, featured collaborations with artists such as Sexyy Red, Nardo Wick, Real Boston Richey, Hunxho, and the late Lil Poppa. She also performed as an opening act on Lil Baby’s WHAM Tour and was brought onstage by YoungBoy Never Broke Again during an Atlanta tour stop.

Looking Ahead

Pluto is already planning for the future, with another album slated for release in 2026 and plans to launch a nonprofit organization. She emphasizes her commitment to continued growth and success, stating, “I got my foot on the gas…I can’t do nothing but drop.” Pluto’s maturity and dedication suggest a long and successful career in the music industry.
