Pokémon Winds and Waves: Gen 10 Arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027
The Pokémon franchise is entering a fresh era with the announcement of Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, the tenth generation of Pokémon games. Revealed during the 2026 Pokémon Day celebrations, these titles will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 and are slated for a simultaneous worldwide release in 2027.
The announcement trailer showcased a visually stunning open world featuring windswept islands and a vast ocean environment. The games promise a new adventure where players will team up with Pokémon to overcome challenges and even the forces of nature.
Players will embody the main character, with distinct outfits differing between Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. The trailer also introduced the three Gen 10 starter Pokémon: Browt, the Grass-type “Bean Chick Pokémon”; Pombon, the Fire-type “Puppy Pokémon”; and Gecqua, the Water-type “Water Gecko Pokémon.”
Early reactions online have focused on Pombon, the Fire-type starter, which quickly trended on social media platform X. The trending post has garnered comments referencing the internet meme “Nyaoha don’t stand up,” potentially stemming from concerns about animal-type Pokémon becoming humanoid. However, much of the online conversation centers around Pombon’s cute appearance, with fans sharing images of their own small dogs.
Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves represent a significant step forward for the franchise, utilizing the enhanced capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. The rolling water effects and Pokémon sprites displayed in the trailer suggest a visual upgrade from previous entries. These new titles mark the first time a main series Pokémon game will be exclusive to a new Nintendo console at launch.
