A 16-Track Expansion of the SMILE! Era

Porter Robinson has released SMILE! 😀 plus+, a two-disc, 16-track expansion of his 2024 album SMILE! 😀. Issued via Mom+Pop Music, the collection features a dense roster of collaborators tasked with providing new interpretations of the original tracks, as reported by live in limbo.

Electronic Artists Contribute Experimental Reworks to the Project

The project pulls from a wide range of electronic and experimental pop artists. Disc one features contributions from Ninajirachi, underscores, Frost Children, G Jones, Nitepunk, EJEAN, Leon Valley, Vertile, and jamesjamesjames. Music Existence noted that the release highlights Robinson’s creative community and his willingness to explore different genre boundaries.

Key moments include Nitepunk’s high-energy rework of “Cheerleader,” a collaboration between Ninajirachi and underscores on “Perfect Pinterest Garden,” and G Jones’ take on “Russian Roulette.” Frost Children also contributed an experimental pop version of “Is There Really No Happiness?” The collection further includes a mashup of “Mona Lisa” featuring Frost Children and G Jones, alongside EJEAN’s rework of “Year of the Cup” and Leon Valley’s take on “Kitsune Maison Freestyle.”

Diverse Collaborations on Disc Two

The second disc broadens the album’s sonic palette with additional remixes and covers. It includes Robinson’s own work under his DJ NOT PORTER ROBINSON moniker, alongside contributions from Control Freak, Atura, Joey Valence, and Japanese rock band Galileo Galilei, who provided a cover of “Easier to Love You.” Notably, a version of “Cheerleader” featuring Hatsune Miku and Jamie Paige is also included. Other tracks appearing on the second disc include a Control Freak remix of “Cheerleader,” as well as new versions of “Is There Really No Happiness?” from Atura and Joey Valence.

Contextualizing the Artist’s Evolution

The original SMILE! 😀 album arrived in July 2024. Music Existence observed that the project marked a shift toward guitar-driven alternative pop while maintaining the electronic experimentation seen in Robinson’s previous work. The album addressed themes of identity, fame, and the relationship between an artist and their audience. This expansion continues that exploration by allowing other artists to recontextualize the source material through diverse production styles.

The collection moves between explosive electronic production, hard-hitting club sounds, and experimental pop.
