A next-generation powder hemostatic agent has been developed, capable of stopping bleeding within one second when sprayed onto an injured area. This innovative technology considerably increases the chances of survival for individuals at risk of excessive bleeding.

KAIST announced on the 29th that a joint research team, led by Professor Steve Park of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Professor Sang-yong Jeon of the Department of Life Sciences, has created a powder-type hemostatic agent (AGCL powder). This agent forms a strong hydrogel barrier within one second, effectively halting bleeding with a simple spray submission.

Developed with direct input from an Army major researcher, AGCL powder boasts practical technology suited for real-world, demanding environments like combat zones or disaster sites. Its high usability and storability allow for immediate treatment even under extreme conditions.

Currently, patch-type hemostatic agents are commonly used in medical settings. However, their flat structure makes application to deep or complex wounds difficult, and they are susceptible to temperature and humidity, limiting their storage and operational capabilities.

The joint research team overcame these limitations by developing a powder-form hemostatic agent that can be freely applied to both deep and irregular wounds. This versatility allows AGCL powder to effectively address a wide range of wound types with a single application.

AGCL powder’s structure combines biocompatible natural materials such as alginate and gellan gum.
