Indonesia’s Cabinet Approves One-Day-a-Week Work From Home Policy

Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is expected to formally announce a modern policy allowing government employees and potentially private sector workers to work from home (WFH) one day per week, following agreement among ministers. The initiative, spearheaded by Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, aims to conserve energy amid concerns over potential energy crises linked to conflicts in the Middle East.

Karnavian revealed that the agreement was reached after a meeting involving Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. The discussion centered on strategies to mitigate potential economic fallout from the ongoing Middle East conflict. DetikNews reported the consensus reached during the nearly four-hour meeting.

“We agreed to have one voice,” Karnavian stated after a press conference at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. He noted that the specific day for WFH is still pending presidential approval and official announcement. Tempo.co also reported on the agreement.

While Karnavian declined to disclose the preferred day for WFH, he emphasized that the government has experience with remote work arrangements, citing successful implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed confidence that the policy would not disrupt public services. TribunFlores.com highlighted assurances that public services would remain unaffected.

The Minister of Home Affairs also indicated that both central and regional governments are prepared for the implementation of the one-day-a-week WFH scheme, drawing on lessons learned during the pandemic when work-from-office (WFO) levels were significantly reduced. Kompas.com confirmed that the policy is awaiting final direction from President Prabowo Subianto.
