French Language and Culture Celebrated at Presentation College Carlow
Presentation College Carlow recently hosted its annual ‘Semaine Française’ (French Week), providing students with an immersive experience in French language, culture, and cuisine. The week-long event featured a diverse range of activities designed to enhance students’ confidence and appreciation of the French way of life.
Activities and Highlights
Students participated in various engaging activities throughout the week, including games mornings, treasure hunts, geography challenges, and a fashion show. A key highlight was the student-run fashion show, where third-year students showcased their designs and creativity on a makeshift catwalk.
Fundraising for the Terretta Foundation
The 16 students preparing for a trip to Tanzania in October used the event as an opportunity to raise funds for the Terretta Foundation. A crepe morning fundraiser generated over €500, which will be donated to the foundation to support its perform with vulnerable children in Tanzania.
Student Achievements
First-year students also contributed to the week’s success, with Oisín Cadinot, Oisín Mc Mahon, and Jamie Fenlon recognized as poster competition winners.
Teacher’s Perspective
French teacher Ms. Bowden expressed her satisfaction with the week’s outcome, noting that it was “undoubtedly educational as well as enjoyable.” She emphasized that the diverse activities allowed students to become more familiar with French culture and lifestyle.
Alliance Française Initiatives
The celebration of French language and culture extends beyond Presentation College Carlow. Alliance Française Waterford Wexford, launched in September 2025, aims to promote the French language and culture in the Wexford and Waterford regions through various programs [1]. St. Kieran’s College Kilkenny also actively promotes French language learning, as evidenced by student participation in French week activities [2].
Vive le français!
