Prince Andrew Released Under Investigation Following Arrest
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, was released from Aylsham Police Station in Norfolk on Thursday after being held for approximately 11 hours, according to the BBC report.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the release to the BBC, coinciding with the publication of a photograph showing a visibly stunned Andrew leaving the station in a vehicle.
Police initially took Andrew, who turned 66 on February 19th, into custody at King Charles’ Sandringham estate earlier on Thursday.
Arrest Details
The arrest was made on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Thames Valley Police stated, “As part of the investigation, we have today (19/2) arrested a man in his sixties from Norfolk on suspicion of misconduct in public office and are carrying out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. The man remains in police custody at this time.”
Authorities have not disclosed the specific nature of the alleged misconduct.
The Guardian reports the arrest appears to be related to his conduct while serving as a U.K. Trade envoy and follows the release of emails connected to Jeffrey Epstein.
Previous Denials and Royal Response
Andrew has previously denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.
King Charles issued a statement expressing his “deepest concern” and affirming that “the law must take its course.” He stated the authorities have his “full and wholehearted” co-operation.
The King added, “As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
Andrew has been released under investigation.
