Asha Sharma Charts Fresh Course for Microsoft Gaming with Project Helix
The first days of Asha Sharma as CEO of Microsoft Gaming haven’t been quiet. Following Phil Spencer’s retirement after nearly four decades with the company, Sharma is signaling a shift in strategy, prioritizing hardware innovation alongside cloud gaming and studio acquisitions. A key tenet of her vision: a commitment to avoiding “soulless AI garbage” in game development.
Project Helix: A Hybrid Gaming Platform
Sharma recently revealed details about “Project Helix,” the next-generation Microsoft console. Described as a platform that blends the features of consoles and PCs, Project Helix aims to deliver a unified gaming experience. “It will be a leader in performance and reproduction of Xbox and PC games,” Sharma tweeted, adding she looks forward to discussing the project further at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) next week.
A Return to Hardware Focus
This emphasis on hardware represents a potential turnaround for Microsoft Gaming. Under Spencer’s leadership, the company increasingly focused on cloud gameplay and acquiring game studios, such as Activision Blizzard in 2023, with a $75 billion investment. Project Helix suggests a renewed commitment to console innovation.
Backwards Compatibility and AMD Partnership
Microsoft has confirmed Project Helix as the code name for the next generation of Xbox. The console is expected to feature backwards compatibility, allowing players to enjoy titles from the Xbox Series S and Series X. This will be enabled by a chip provided by AMD.
Console Pricing Concerns
Rumors suggest the new console may come with a higher price tag, potentially around $1,000. Further details regarding the Xbox Series replacement are anticipated at the GDC event, taking place from March 9 to 13.
Project Helix: A Code Name
It’s important to note that “Project Helix” is currently an internal code name and will likely be replaced before the product’s official launch. Microsoft has a history of using code names during the development process – “Durango” for the Xbox 360, “Scorpio” for the Xbox One, and “Anaconda” for the Xbox Series X.
Sharma’s Leadership and Future Outlook
Asha Sharma joined Microsoft in 2024 from Instacart and now reports directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Nadella expressed confidence in Sharma’s ability to lead the gaming business into its next era of growth, citing her experience in building and scaling services that reach billions of users.
