Providence Lands 5-Star Center Lewis Uvwo for Bryan Hodgson Rebuild

Providence Lands Five-Star Center Lewis Uvwo

Providence secured a commitment from five-star center Lewis Uvwo, giving first-year coach Bryan Hodgson a foundational piece for the program, The Sporting News reported. Uvwo, a 6-foot-10 senior with a reported 7-foot-6 wingspan, chose the Friars over Kentucky, Baylor, and California. Ranked No. 7 nationally in the 2027 class by 247Sports, he stands as the top center in his class.

The commitment carries notable historical weight for Providence. Uvwo matches former Friars Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn as the highest-ranked recruit in the program’s history according to 247Sports’ database. He also marks only the third five-star prospect the program has landed in the 247Sports era.

Recruiting Battle and Program Impact

The decision serves as an early test of Hodgson’s pitch after he took over the program in March following a season at South Florida. Uvwo pointed to the people, culture, and Hodgson’s track record and vision as the primary reasons for his choice, noting an opportunity to help push the program to new heights.

For competing programs like Kentucky and Baylor, the recruitment demonstrates how player priorities can shift toward building a distinct chapter at a rising program. For Providence, the addition provides an elite interior presence that alters how opposing offenses must attack the paint.

Providence's Roster Construction Establishes Tactical Anchor

Uvwo’s commitment does not immediately guarantee contention in the Big East. Freshmen face a transitional adjustment period to college basketball, and Providence still needs to complete the surrounding roster construction. However, adding a premier center establishes a tactical anchor for the coaching staff. Guards can feed the post, perimeter shooters gain space from interior defensive attention, and perimeter defenders can take calculated risks with an elite rim protector behind them.
