Schizophrenie Symptoms and Stigma Examined by Psychiatrist Michael Rentrop. Schizophrenia symptoms such as hearing voices, hallucinations, and delusions typically emerge during late adolescence or early adulthood, often preceded by a long initial phase involving unspecific changes (Web.de). Michael Rentrop, a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy as well as chief physician of the clinical social psychiatry department at the kbo-Inn-Salzach-Klinikum in Wasserburg, explains that the condition belongs to a group of psychotic disorders and involves significant mental and neurological changes.

In acute phases, individuals may experience delusions such as feeling persecuted, watched, or threatened, alongside hallucinations. Changes in thought processes can also occur, with some patients believing their thoughts are being inputted or withdrawn from the outside. Rentrop notes that these alterations are reflected in the brain, pointing to an apparent overactivity of the dopamine metabolism within the limbic system, which governs perception, thinking, and action. Another common experience includes fears that are incomprehensible to others, such as fearing poisoning and refusing food or taking special precautions before eating.

Symptome und Krankheitsbild

The term schizophrenia historically translates to a splitting of the mind, which has led to the widespread misconception that the condition involves split or multiple personalities. Rentrop clarifies that this is a misunderstanding; the illness affects various psychological areas including thinking, feeling, volition, and action, rather than creating multiple identities. While abilities can be severely limited during acute phases, they are not fundamentally lost.

Stigmatisierung und Vorurteile

Social stigma remains a major burden for those affected. Rentrop warns against the prevalent prejudice that people with schizophrenia are simply crazy, noting that many patients deeply fear this labeling and feel significant shame, especially when unusual behavior causes them to stand out socially. Rentrop explains that people with schizophrenia do not stand out more in overall crime statistics than the general population, though a small group involving poorly treated individuals who consume substances and experience high internal pressure can pose a danger primarily to their immediate environment in rare cases of severe delusions.
