Sony Integrates Crunchyroll Into PlayStation 5 Ecosystem for Spring 2027
Sony is expanding its anime streaming strategy by launching a dedicated Crunchyroll Hub on the PlayStation 5 home screen in spring 2027, reported. PlayStation President and CEO Hideaki Nishino announced the upcoming feature at Sony’s inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum, aiming to merge anime content, game adaptations, and the streaming app into a unified console experience. Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini noted that the new hub advances the collaboration between Crunchyroll and Sony Interactive Entertainment to meet fans directly within their gaming environments.
Formation of Crunchyroll Storyworks to Lead IP Development
To feed the new ecosystem, Crunchyroll has established a dedicated production division named Crunchyroll Storyworks. Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja stated that the new unit will focus on producing original anime and live-action adaptations in partnership with Japan’s creative ecosystem.
Tohru Iokibe, who previously supervised IP acceleration programs for Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, will lead the Storyworks division. The department brings together Crunchyroll, Aniplex, Sony Pictures, and Japanese creators to develop cross-media stories for global audiences.
Evolution of the Sony and Crunchyroll Partnership
Sony acquired Crunchyroll from AT&T in 2021 for $11.75 billion, a transaction that valued the anime platform at roughly 7.88 billion yuan under current exchange rates. Prior to the upcoming hub, Crunchyroll operated on the PlayStation 5 primarily as a standalone application downloaded from the console’s media space since the hardware’s 2020 launch.
The upcoming 2027 integration seeks to bridge the gap between gaming and streaming communities. Sony’s corporate communications highlight that anime and video games share highly overlapping audiences, making a centralized discovery space necessary for users transitioning between interactive titles and related shows.
Crunchyroll Hub Arrives on PlayStation 5 by Spring 2027
The new Crunchyroll Hub on the PlayStation 5 will grant users direct access to the main streaming application alongside curated discovery tools for anime titles and game adaptations. Upcoming projects from the partnership include an animated series based on Ghost of Tsushima Legends,
according to company disclosures at the forum.
Sony leadership maintains that the initiative prioritizes creator visions while scaling anime into a broader global cultural force. The rollout schedule sets the delivery of the PlayStation 5 interface integration for the spring 2027 release window.
