Indonesian Public Works Minister Addresses Resignations Following Audit Findings

Recent resignations of two Director Generals within Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works (PU) stem from findings by the Financial Audit Agency (BPK) regarding potential state financial losses, according to Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo. The minister detailed a timeline of events and outlined steps being taken to address the issues and improve internal oversight.

Timeline of Events

Minister Hanggodo explained that the BPK initially sent a letter in January 2025, indicating a potential loss of nearly IDR 3 trillion (approximately $187 million USD as of March 1, 2026).1 He immediately instructed staff to investigate. A subsequent letter in August 2025 revised the estimated loss to around IDR 1 trillion (approximately $62 million USD as of March 1, 2026).1

Recommendations and Response

The BPK also recommended the formation of an ad hoc team and teams at the perform unit level to expedite the recovery of state losses. However, Minister Hanggodo stated that these recommendations were not initially followed up on by the Ministry.1

Minister Takes Direct Control

In response, Minister Hanggodo assumed direct responsibility for handling the matter. He announced plans to form an ad hoc team and modern teams within work units to accelerate the recovery of funds and minimize disruption to daily operations.1 He also intends to reactivate the Audit Committee to strengthen internal supervision, stating, “I can’t clean my house if my broom is dirty.”1

Support from the Attorney General’s Office

Minister Hanggodo highlighted support from the Attorney General’s Office, with three officials from that office joining the team he established.1 He emphasized that the resignations of the two Director Generals – Dewi Chomistriana (Human Settlements) and Dwi Purwantoro (Water Resources) – were not sudden, but followed this process.1

Minister Hanggodo’s Background

Dody Hanggodo has served as Indonesia’s Minister of Public Works since October 21, 2024, under President Prabowo Subianto.1 He is also a businessman and politician affiliated with the Demokrat party.1 He holds degrees from the Bandung Institute of Technology and Tulsa University.1
