The CHU de Toulouse is investing €1.4 million to add 136 parking spaces to the P1 lot at the Purpan hospital site.
Why is the Purpan P1 parking lot being expanded?
The expansion replaces a former nursery building that was demolished due to asbestos contamination. Sarah Viguier, director of the Purpan site, stated that the P1 lot is the primary entry point for users arriving via Avenue Jean-Dausset and is the most used parking area on the site, with nearly 500 existing spaces.

The project aims to resolve a “convoluted” traffic flow that previously mixed staff and public parking. The new layout implements a “forward motion” (marche en avant) system. While the entrance remains the same, the exit will now be located behind the former nursery site, directing traffic toward Avenue de Grande-Bretagne to avoid logistics vehicles.
What safety and environmental features are included?
The €1.4 million investment includes a focus on security and urban ecology. The CHU is expanding its video surveillance and installing an experimental alert beacon. Viguier noted this feature is intended to protect staff and users, specifically citing the high proportion of women using the vast urban parking zone.
To mitigate the environmental impact, the hospital is preserving healthy existing trees from the former nursery park and planting 54 new trees to create a “green corridor” (coulée verte) intended to improve the site’s atmosphere.
The P1 expansion is a strategic move to offset future parking losses. While the GHRE will eventually include underground parking, the P2 lot will be unavailable during the construction phase.
Official tenders for the GHRE are currently under review.
What is the broader investment in hospital infrastructure?
This project is part of a larger capital investment strategy. Over the last four years, the CHU has spent more than €10 million on parking infrastructure across both the Purpan and Rangueil sites since resuming direct management of these facilities.
