Despite the concerns about Trump’s negotiation tactics, the administration has also taken steps to pressure Russia through its network of proxy countries. In 2025, Trump threatened “very severe consequences” for Russia if it didn’t commit to a deal to end the war, targeting Russian allies Iran and Venezuela to force Putin’s hand. This strategy aimed to reduce Russia’s revenue streams, and resources.

Temporary Halt to Attacks on Energy Infrastructure

Recently, Putin reportedly agreed to a temporary halt in attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, following a request from Trump.
