Snezhanka Salad Crowned World’s Best Cucumber Dish by TasteAtlas

Bulgaria’s Snezhanka salad, affectionately known as “Snow White” salad, has been named the world’s best cucumber dish by the global gastronomy guide TasteAtlas. The announcement, made on February 16, 2026, highlights the growing recognition of Balkan and Mediterranean cuisines in the culinary world.

TasteAtlas Rankings and Bulgarian Success

TasteAtlas’s updated “Top 50 Dishes Made with Cucumber” list for 2026 places Snezhanka salad at the top, with a score of 4.3. This achievement surpasses other popular cucumber-based dishes, including Greece’s Tzatziki and Horiatiki (Greek salad), which secured second and third place respectively. According to TasteAtlas data, Snezhanka is a “gem of Bulgarian cuisine.”

What is Snezhanka Salad?

Snezhanka salad is a cold salad known for its predominantly white color. It’s prepared with strained yogurt, finely chopped cucumber, garlic, and dill. Nuts, roasted peppers, and chopped parsley are sometimes added as a garnish, depending on personal preference. TasteAtlas describes it as a unique appetizer, particularly well-suited to accompany alcoholic beverages during the summer months.

Other Notable Dishes

While Snezhanka took the top spot, other cuisines also received recognition. Greece demonstrated a strong presence with Tzatziki and Horiatiki in the top three. Mexican, Peruvian, Iranian, and Chinese cuisines also ranked highly with their unique cucumber-based recipes. Notably, Türkiye’s iconic dish, Cacık, ranked 11th on the list.

Bulgarian Salads Gain Global Recognition

Beyond Snezhanka, other Bulgarian salads are gaining international acclaim. Shepherd’s salad is described by TasteAtlas as a variation of the Shop salad, consisting of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and cheese, with the addition of mushrooms, eggs, and ham. It ranked among the 24 best salads globally. The Shop salad itself also secured a place in the top ten, at eighth position, surpassing its Greek counterpart. Bulgarian white brine cheese has also been recognized, receiving a protected designation of origin from Bulgaria.

The Rise of Balkan Cuisine

The success of Snezhanka and other Bulgarian salads underscores the increasing popularity of Balkan and Mediterranean cuisines worldwide. The competition among these cuisines is described as “fierce,” with a focus on refreshing flavors and seasonal ingredients.
