Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, positioning it as the world’s fastest mobile system-on-a-chip (SoC). Qualcomm emphasizes the chip’s powerful on-device agentic AI capabilities, aiming for more personalized and intuitive experiences within the Galaxy ecosystem. This SoC integrates a CPU, GPU, digital signal processors (DSP) and a cellular modem into a single package, supporting operating systems like Android and Windows. The CPU is based on the ARM architecture, utilizing both licensed IP cores from ARM Holdings and in-house developed cores.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 features Qualcomm’s third-generation Oryon CPU technology, reportedly the fastest mobile CPU ever, and is 20% faster than the previous generation. It also boasts a 35% improvement in power efficiency for the CPU and a 16% improvement in overall SoC power efficiency. The chip remains on a 3nm process and includes two 4.6GHz prime cores and six 3.62GHz performance cores. The Adreno GPU delivers a 23% performance boost in gaming with a 20% reduction in power consumption.

The Growing RAM Crisis: “RAMageddon”

A growing crisis in the RAM market, referred to as “RAMageddon,” is impacting both smartphone and laptop manufacturers. Analysts at Tom’s Guide report that this shortage is leading to increased prices and potentially reduced specifications in upcoming devices. Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, attributed a significant decline in the company’s chip business “100 percent” to the memory shortage, noting the AI industry’s demand for components is a major factor. Device manufacturers are already reducing production volumes due to the limited RAM supply.

The impact of the RAM shortage is already visible in the market, with Samsung recently announcing new phones priced $100 higher than previous models, partially attributed to RAM costs.

Impact on Gaming and Windows on Arm

Qualcomm’s plans for Windows gaming handhelds have been affected, potentially due to the RAM shortage and Microsoft’s strategic control over Windows on Arm launches. Valve is actively working to bring Windows games to Arm-based devices, with promising early results. The Snapdragon X Series and G Series processors are intended to drive advancements in PC, desktop, and handheld gaming devices, but their progress is tied to resolving the RAM supply issues.
