Russian Forces Advance in Eastern Ukraine, Intensifying Pressure on Key Towns

Russian forces have intensified their offensive in eastern Ukraine, making incremental gains in the Sumy and Donetsk regions, according to recent reports from the Ukrainian military analysis group DeepState. The advances are occurring as Russia attempts to encircle key Ukrainian-held towns and disrupt supply lines.

Recent Advances Reported by DeepState

DeepState reported on February 26, 2026, that Russian troops have advanced in the settlement of Pokrovka in Sumy Oblast. MSN reports that advances have also been made in the villages of Nykyforivka and Lypivka, and near Platonivka in Donetsk Oblast.

Russian troops have advanced in the north of the Donetsk Region, seizing positions near Reznikovka, Pazeno, and Privolye. This brings Russian forces within 15 kilometers of the outskirts of Sloviansk. Ukranews

Focus on Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad

Russian forces are concentrating efforts to encircle Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in the Donetsk Oblast, with DeepState estimating the gap between Russian forces and a complete encirclement at approximately five kilometers (three miles). The Kyiv Independent reports that Russia is attempting to cut off Ukrainian logistic routes from the north to force a withdrawal from these towns.

Pokrovsk serves as a crucial logistics hub for Ukrainian forces, situated at the intersection of major rail and highway routes. Russia has committed significant resources to capturing the city over the past year.

Ukrainian Resistance and Counterattacks

Despite the Russian advances, Ukrainian defense forces have successfully pushed back against Russian troops near several settlements in Donetsk Oblast, halting the enemy’s advance in certain areas. Yahoo News reports that Ukrainian forces have repelled Russian advances near Rubizhne, Zoloty Kolodiaz, Vesele, Vilne, Shakhove, Nykanorivka, and Sukhetske.

The First Corps Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine has reported inflicting significant losses on Russian forces during search-and-destroy operations, including personnel killed in action, prisoners of war, and captured equipment. Stabilization actions are ongoing on the Dobropillia front, with Ukrainian military actively countering Russian attempts to secure a foothold near the Dobropillia-Kramatorsk road.

Ongoing Conflict and Future Outlook

The situation in eastern Ukraine remains highly dynamic, with both sides engaged in intense fighting. Russia’s continued offensive pressure on Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, coupled with advances in other areas, suggests a continued focus on consolidating control over the Donetsk Oblast. Ukrainian forces are actively resisting these advances and attempting to stabilize the front lines, but the coming weeks will be critical in determining the trajectory of the conflict.
