Quentin Tarantino Unveils 17 Minutes of Cliff Booth Sequel at AFI Fest

Quentin Tarantino surprised a packed house at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, by screening the first 17 minutes of The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, USA Today reported. The footage marks the first public look at the follow-up to his 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. While Tarantino wrote the script, David Fincher took over directing duties for the project, which stars Brad Pitt reprising his Oscar-winning role as the laid-back stuntman Cliff Booth.

The surprise screening occurred at the end of a Q&A session following an IMAX screening of the original film during AFI Fest 2026. “Well, I could talk a little bit about ‘The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,’ or I could show you the first 17 minutes,” Tarantino told the cheering audience. Security guards monitored the theater strictly, pouncing on any mobile phones before the footage rolled to prevent unauthorized recordings.

Brad Pitt Returns as the Paperback Hero in 1977 Los Angeles

The sequel fast-forwards to 1977, moving past the 1969 timeline of the original film. The official logline was shared by Deadline: Hollywood will always face challenges that demand a man with Cliff’s unique and sometimes extralegal capabilities, even if Los Angeles no longer requires a stuntman who slays hippies quite like it once did. Working shifts as a projectionist or a bartender keeps Cliff Booth afloat, but his main gig is acting as a fixer for the upper echelon and occasional lowlifes of Hollywood.

Tarantino explained that his affection for the character and Pitt’s performance inspired him to return to the world. He envisioned Booth as a vintage paperback hero who could sustain a series of adventures. “I could see a series of paperbacks for Cliff Booth getting involved with this adventure or that adventure or something like that,” Tarantino said at the festival.

David Fincher Directs a Script Cut Down from 230 Pages

Fincher walked the red carpet for the event and watched the screening from the audience, leaving Tarantino to introduce the sequel footage solo as a sign of Hollywood respect. Development on the movie began after Pitt and Fincher teamed up in 2024 for a project Tarantino originally wanted to direct. Fincher revealed to Empire that the initial script delivered by Tarantino ran 230 pages, requiring the director to cut 60 pages. “It was essentially two movies,” Fincher said, adding that the final cut of the film runs about 2 1/2 hours.

The massive ensemble stars Scott Caan, Elizabeth Debicki, Peter Weller, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Matt Groove, Corey Fogelmanis, Karren Karagulian, and JB Tadena. The opening 17-minute preview introduced Cliff’s pawnshop-owning father, played by RoboCop star Peter Weller, alongside familiar elements like Cliff’s yellow Hawaiian shirt and an after-hours soundproofed movie theater where he works as a projectionist.

Theatrical Release Windows and Stage Debut Scheduled

Netflix scheduled a theatrical rollout for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth in IMAX theaters on November 25, 2026, ahead of its streaming debut on December 23, 2026. The distribution strategy makes it one of the rare Netflix titles to receive a run in IMAX venues before streaming.
