Quentin Tarantino's First Stage Play to Open in London in March

Quentin Tarantino will make his West End directorial debut with the stage play “The Popinjay Cavalier,” which is set to open at London’s Phoenix Theatre on March 18, 2026. The production, announced Sunday by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, features Sacha Baron Cohen in his own West End debut, according to the Associated Press. Previews for the show are scheduled to begin on February 23, 2026.

A Swashbuckling Comedy in 1830s Europe

The play is described by producers as a “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise” inspired by classic swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. Set in 1830s Europe, the project marks the first stage play written and directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker. Sacha Baron Cohen, known for creating characters such as Borat and Ali G, joined the production after being recruited by the director. “When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions,” Baron Cohen said regarding his involvement.

Tarantino’s Return to Directing

This project follows a period of transition for Tarantino, who has not directed a feature film since the 2019 release of “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” While he steps into the theater for “The Popinjay Cavalier,” his work in film continues through a separate project. The sequel, “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,” features a screenplay written by Tarantino and is directed by David Fincher. Brad Pitt is set to reprise his role as the stuntman Cliff Booth in the film, which is scheduled for release in November 2026.

Literary Expansions for Hollywood Stories

In addition to his stage and film work, Tarantino is expanding his storytelling into literature. He has authored a novelization of “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” along with a novelization for the upcoming sequel film. The latter is slated for publication on December 8, 2026, by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.
