Quick and Easy Dal Dhokli Recipe

Dal dhokli is a traditional Indian dish that combines lentil stew (dal) with spiced wheat flour dumplings (dhokli). It is a comforting, one-pot meal commonly prepared in Gujarati and Rajasthani households. The dish is known for its balance of protein from the lentils and carbohydrates from the dumplings, making it a nutritious option for both lunch and dinner.

The preparation involves cooking toor dal (split pigeon peas) with turmeric, salt, and water until soft. Meanwhile, a dough is made from whole wheat flour, spices such as cumin, coriander, red chili powder, and ajwain (carom seeds), and sometimes a bit of oil or ghee. This dough is rolled into small diamond-shaped pieces—these are the dhokli—which are then added directly to the simmering dal.

As the dhokli cook in the dal, they absorb the flavors and thicken the stew, giving it a hearty texture. A tempering (tadka) of mustard seeds, cumin, asafoetida (hing), curry leaves, and dried red chilies in ghee or oil is often added at the end to enhance aroma and taste. Some variations include adding tomatoes, peanuts, or jaggery for a sweet-sour note.

Dal dhokli is typically served hot, garnished with fresh cilantro and a wedge of lemon. It pairs well with rice or can be enjoyed on its own. The dish is valued not only for its taste but also for its ease of preparation and use of pantry staples, making it a practical choice for everyday meals.
