Quinn Cook’s Basketball Career Impacted by Geopolitical Issues
Two-time NBA champion Quinn Cook has faced unexpected obstacles in his international basketball career, with recent job offers falling through due to escalating global political tensions. The 32-year-ancient guard’s experiences highlight the growing intersection of sports and international relations.
Lost Opportunities in Rwanda and Iran
Cook recently secured a deal to play for Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Basketball Club (APR BBC) in the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) season. However, he was informed on Tuesday, March 11, 2026, that APR BBC would not participate in the BAL due to a political standoff between the United States, and Rwanda. ESPN reports this decision followed the U.S. Imposing visa restrictions on senior Rwandan officials over concerns about instability in eastern Congo.
Prior to the APR BBC agreement, Cook had also reached terms to play for Esteghlal BC in the Iranian Basketball Super League in January. However, he declined the offer due to fears surrounding a potential conflict between the United States and Iran, which subsequently escalated on February 28th. ESPN
A First for the NBA Veteran
“My whole life, until now, I’ve never had basketball stop for political things that happened in the world,” Cook told ESPN’s Andscape. “It’s a first for me, but it opens your eyes that there is more to life than just basketball. People who depend on basketball for happiness and a job, you have to understand that there are bigger things in life.”
Cook acknowledged the situation has prompted him to consider future opportunities beyond the court. “Obviously, I’m a basketball player first. That’s my main job. It’s opened my eyes to get into some other things so when I stop playing in five or six years, I will have the red carpet rolled out to the next things I seek to do.”
APR BBC’s Situation and the BAL
APR BBC, the Rwandan league champion and owned by the Rwandan Ministry of Defence, was scheduled to open the BAL Kalahari Conference play against Libya Al Ahly Ly on March 27 in Pretoria, South Africa. ESPN reports that APR BBC is expected to be replaced by another Rwandan team, with Patriots BBC, Tigers BBC, and Rwanda Energy Group (REG) BBC as potential candidates.
Despite APR BBC’s withdrawal, the BAL playoffs and championship game, scheduled to be held in Kigali from May 22-31, are still expected to proceed as planned. ESPN
Cook’s Background and Future Outlook
The former Duke star has won NBA titles with the Golden State Warriors (2018) and the Los Angeles Lakers (2020). He has played 188 NBA games for the Mavericks, Pelicans, Warriors, Lakers, and Cavaliers, averaging 6.4 points and 1.6 assists. ESPN Cook has also competed internationally in Russia, China, Puerto Rico, and Saudi Arabia, most recently playing for the Fujian SBS Xunxing Sturgeons in the Chinese Basketball Association in April 2025.
Cook remains open to joining another team in the BAL. “I have never been to Africa,” Cook said. “I was excited about checking it out. I also planned on going with my mom and sister. Rwanda was a spot we were supposed to hit, but now I will have to wait and see. Everything happens for a reason, but I hope BAL teams see I’m available and I’m open to play for another team.” ESPN
IGIHE and Instagram also reported on APR BBC’s signing of Cook prior to the political developments.
