Are AI Chatbots Making Us All Think Alike?

Part of what makes us human is the unique ways we think and solve problems. But increasingly, the widespread use of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT may be eroding this uniqueness and leading humans to think and communicate in more standardized ways, according to recent research.

The Homogenization of Thought

“Individuals differ in how they write, reason, and view the world,” says Zhivar Sourati, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California and the first author of a new opinion paper on the topic [1]. “When these differences are mediated by the same LLMs, their distinct linguistic style, perspective and reasoning strategies become homogenized, producing standardized expressions and thoughts across users.”

Published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences, the paper examines the implications of hundreds of millions of people worldwide relying on a limited number of chatbots [4]. The concern isn’t simply how AI shapes what we say, but how it subtly redefines what is considered credible, correct, or even good reasoning.

Rising AI Usage

The trend towards increased AI adoption is significant. Pew Research found that one-third of all Americans used ChatGPT in 2023, doubling the figure from the previous year. Chatbot use is even more prevalent among teenagers, with two-thirds reporting usage and nearly a third using them daily. Businesses are also rapidly integrating AI, with Stanford reporting that 78% of organizations were using AI in 2024, up from 55% in 2023.

Why LLMs Encourage Standardization

The authors argue that LLMs generate writing that exhibits less variation than human-created content. This is partly due to the data used to train these models. “Because LLMs are trained to capture and reproduce statistical regularities in their training data, which often overrepresent dominant languages and ideologies, their outputs often mirror a narrow and skewed slice of human experience,” Sourati explains [2].

The Importance of Pluralism

The potential loss of diverse thinking is a key concern. Homogenized thought reduces pluralism – the idea that multiple perspectives are beneficial for society. “This value of pluralism is rooted in the long-held principle that sound judgment requires exposure to varied thought,” the authors write. “Unchecked, this homogenization risks flattening the cognitive landscapes that drive collective intelligence, and adaptability.”

The impact extends beyond direct chatbot users. Sourati notes that individuals may feel pressure to conform to the dominant thinking patterns exhibited by those around them who do use chatbots, perceiving it as more credible or socially acceptable.

Implications for the Future

As AI continues to evolve and become more integrated into daily life, understanding and mitigating the potential for homogenization of thought will be crucial. Further research is needed to explore strategies for preserving cognitive diversity in an age of increasingly powerful language models.
