Rachel Zegler Opens Up About Snow White Backlash, Safety Threats, and Industry Challenges
Rachel Zegler, the actress behind Disney’s live-action Snow White, has revealed the intense backlash she faced following her casting led to threats to her safety and a period of significant self-doubt. Zegler, who rose to prominence in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, shared her experiences in a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, detailing the challenges of navigating identity and representation in Hollywood.
Facing Criticism and a Sense of “Being Nothing”
The casting of Zegler, who is of Colombian heritage, sparked online criticism due to the traditional depiction of Snow White as having “a complexion as white as snow.” While Zegler expressed gratitude for the support she received, she also requested not to be tagged in negative comments. She described a confusing time in her early twenties, stating, “I was told I wasn’t enough of one thing for West Side Story and too much of another for Snow White.”
Zegler further explained the feeling of being caught between two worlds, stating, “I grew up proud of being Colombian…but I do think there’s an argument to be made that, in the public eye at least, when you’re two things, you’re simultaneously nothing. But I refuse to assimilate for anybody else’s comfort.”
Threats and Regret
The backlash escalated to the point of receiving threats, leading Zegler to reflect on what she would have done differently. “If I’d been able to predict everything that would come my way, the threats to my safety, I would have just thrown my phone into the ocean. I think any sane person would have,” she told Harper’s Bazaar UK. She also expressed a desire for more life experience at the time, wishing she had “maybe five more years” before facing such intense scrutiny.
Support from Industry Peers
Despite the challenges, Zegler has received support from established actresses Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. She described having “long conversations” with them about the difficulties faced by women in the industry and the disappointments they had experienced.
Looking Ahead: The Hunger Games and Beyond
Zegler recently starred in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel to The Hunger Games franchise. She shared her support for Whitney Peak, who has been cast in the upcoming film Sunrise on the Reaping, offering her assistance and guidance. Zegler is also preparing for her stage debut in Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years, a role she described as a “dream role” from her youth.
