Oral Health Program in Rada Tilly Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Expanded Community Outreach

The Hospital Rural de Rada Tilly, under the Chubut Provincial Secretariat of Health, marked the 10th anniversary of its Oral Health Program on April 5, 2024, highlighting its success in promoting dental hygiene through school-based initiatives and community engagement. The program, which focuses on brushing techniques and fluoride application, has trained over 10,000 students across initial, primary, and secondary levels since its inception, according to hospital officials.

Expansion of Oral Health Initiatives

Maruja Ponce, director of the Hospital Rural de Rada Tilly, praised the “professionalism” of the medical team and emphasized the program’s role in fostering “health promoters” within local schools. “The odontopediatra’s dedication to bringing dental knowledge to the community has been instrumental in shaping these efforts,” Ponce stated. The hospital also launched a new Fonoaudiología (speech therapy) service in 2023, targeting children and adults to address issues like speech development and oral motor skills.

Community Engagement Strategies

Lorena Calamante, the hospital’s odontopediatra, noted a “significant shift in household habits” due to the program. “Children are now more conscious of their dietary choices and dental care routines,” she said. Calamante, who has worked in Chubut for 30 years, credited the hospital’s training programs for her expertise. The initiative, which includes biannual visits to schools for fluoride applications, has also encouraged students to become “health promoters” by sharing knowledge with their families.

Long-Term Impact and Future Goals

The program’s success is tied to its collaboration with provincial kindergartens, where a four-year initiative on respiration, speech, and chewing has helped detect early signs of dental issues. Calamante emphasized the importance of “reaching out to communities” to ensure sustained health outcomes. “By making dental care accessible in schools, we’re creating a foundation for lifelong oral health,” she said. The hospital plans to expand its outreach to rural areas in 2024, aiming to reach an additional 5,000 students.
