Juliana Stratton Wins Illinois Senate Democratic Primary, Defeating Raja Krishnamoorthi

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, defeating U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi in a closely watched primary race to succeed retiring Senator Dick Durbin. Krishnamoorthi conceded the race, stating he would not question the outcome, a pointed remark referencing former President Donald Trump’s challenges to election results.

Krishnamoorthi’s Gracious Concession

In his concession speech, Krishnamoorthi acknowledged the unexpected result, humorously noting his name’s complexity – “29 letters” – and thanking supporters who defied the party establishment. He also alluded to the financial backing Stratton received, a veiled reference to Governor JB Pritzker’s support. “This campaign may be over, but my gratitude and friendship will be forever,” he said. Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, has a year remaining in his current term and pledged to continue serving his constituents.

A Historic Opportunity Lost for Krishnamoorthi

Krishnamoorthi’s defeat means Illinois will not have its first Indian-origin senator. He could have become the second Indian-American senator, following Kamala Harris. He reflected on the significance of his journey, stating, “Only in America can an immigrant with twenty-nine letters in his name go from public housing and food stamps to the halls of Congress.”

Community Reaction to Krishnamoorthi’s Loss

The outcome of the primary was met with disappointment within the Indian-American community. Sidharth, co-founder of the Indian American Advocacy Council, questioned why Krishnamoorthi lost despite a strong resume – Princeton, Harvard Law, four terms in Congress, and $30 million in fundraising – stating, “An Indian American did everything right and it still wasn’t enough. Why?”

Krishnamoorthi’s Background

Born in Latest Delhi in 1973, Subramanian Raja Krishnamoorthi immigrated to the United States as an infant and grew up in Illinois. He pursued higher education at Princeton University and Harvard Law School, subsequently working as a lawyer, public servant, and business leader before entering politics in 2017. He is married to Priya Krishnamoorthi, a physician, and they have three children.

Stratton’s Path to Victory

Juliana Stratton’s victory was bolstered by a late surge in support and significant financial contributions from Governor JB Pritzker. She outperformed Krishnamoorthi in key regions, including the Metro East, Sangamon County, Chicago, and some Cook County suburbs. With 85% of votes counted, Stratton led Krishnamoorthi 39.7% to 33.4%, although U.S. Representative Robin Kelly received 18.4% of the vote. Stratton is expected to win the general election in November, as Republicans have not won a statewide election in Illinois in over a decade. She would become the 15th Black U.S. Senator in American history.
