Rare Oriental Turtle Dove Spotted in Ireland – A First for the Island

A rare oriental turtle dove has been sighted in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, marking the first confirmed sighting of this species on the island of Ireland. Local residents first noticed an unusual bird species in a housing estate in Lisburn as early as December 2025, but initially didn’t recognize its rarity. Niall Hatch, Head of Communications and Development at BirdWatch Ireland, described the bird as having a “scalloped tortoise shell pattern on the back, sort of a pinkish wash on the chest, a gray head, and it’s got the sort of little black and white speckled half collar on each side of the neck.” He noted that the bird has been difficult to spot, often hiding in trees, but is quite attractive when viewed in good light.
