RCMP Investigate Alleged Corruption at Calgary City Hall

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are conducting a corruption investigation at Calgary City Hall, executing search warrants at the homes of former mayor Jyoti Gondek, current Ward 10 councillor Andre Chabot and former councillor Sean Chu. The investigation, which began in October 2025, is being handled by the RCMP’s Northwest Strategic Division.

Search Warrants Executed

Search warrants and production orders were executed last week, including one on a local business, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the investigation. Jyoti Gondek confirmed that officers searched her home and seized her cellphone. Andre Chabot stated that RCMP visited his home last Thursday and seized his devices. Sean Chu, through his lawyer Shamsher Kothari, confirmed his cooperation with the investigation, but it was not specified if his home was searched or belongings seized.

Statements from Those Involved

Jyoti Gondek stated, “I’ve been fully cooperative and respectful of the legal process. At the same time, this has been very invasive, and my lawyer and I will be reviewing it closely to ensure it was justified.”

Andre Chabot said, “I’m hoping that somehow it’ll result in something that they can utilize. But at this point, I have no idea what they’re investigating. But I’m fully co-operating with them. I have nothing to hide.”

Sean Chu’s lawyer, Shamsher Kothari, stated, “My client has been co-operative throughout and respects the legal process. No charges have been laid and I glance forward to a swift conclusion of this investigation.”

Investigation Details

The RCMP investigation originated from a referral received from the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in October 2025. Emma Poole, a spokesperson for the CPS, confirmed the referral but did not provide details on the nature of the investigation. Jessica Murphy, an RCMP spokesperson, confirmed the continuing probe but also did not provide further details.

Recent Calgary Election

The investigation follows Calgary’s municipal election in October 2025, where a new mayor and city council were elected. Jyoti Gondek, who served as mayor from 2021 until the election, placed third in the mayoral race. Her tenure was marked by challenges related to aging water infrastructure, an issue that continues to be a concern for the city.

Current Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has stated he has not been contacted by police regarding the investigation.
