Reds Option Encarnacion-Strand and Petty to AAA Louisville

Goodyear, Arizona – The Cincinnati Reds announced Monday they have optioned infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand and right-handed pitcher Chase Petty to Triple-A Louisville. Catcher Michael Trautwein, a non-roster invitee, has been reassigned to minor league camp, reducing the Reds’ spring training roster to 42 players. Yahoo Sports and WKRC reported the moves.

Encarnacion-Strand’s Path to Louisville

Encarnacion-Strand, who started at first base on Opening Day in 2024, has faced challenges with injuries and consistency. WKRC noted he is now blocked at first base by Eugenio Suárez, Sal Stewart, Spencer Steer, and potentially Nathaniel Lowe. He hit 6 home runs at the major league level in 2025 but struggled with a .208 batting average, .234 on-base percentage, and .377 slugging percentage in 137 plate appearances. He was optioned to AAA Louisville in July of 2025 but did not return to the majors for the remainder of the season.

Petty’s Assignment Following Tricky Debut

Petty, a 22-year-old right-hander, was a candidate for the final spot in the starting rotation after an injury to Hunter Greene. However, his initial experience in the majors was challenging. He allowed 14 runs (13 earned) in just 6 innings across three appearances with the Reds. Yahoo Sports reported that Petty posted a 6.39 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 112.2 innings at the AAA level in 2025. Despite this, he is still considered a prospect with potential, though he currently sits behind Rhett Lowder, Chase Burns, and Brandon Williamson in the organizational pitching depth chart.

Reds Roster Shaping Up

The Reds are continuing to finalize their roster as spring training progresses. Left-handers Andrew Abbott and Nick Lodolo are expected to be part of the starting rotation, along with right-hander Brady Singer.
