Five Americans and the director general of Ecuador’s intelligence agency died when their helicopter crashed in central Kenya on Wednesday, according to the country’s civil aviation authority. The aircraft went down around 9:13 a.m. at Mount Ololokwe in Samburu county while traveling from the Loisaba wildlife conservancy to the Ewaso Ngiro river area.
Crash Details and Emergency Response in Samburu County
All seven people on board the aircraft died, Samburu County Police Commander David Nkoroi told reporters. The helicopter, operated by Lady Lori Helicopters, was carrying guests on a charter flight booked through the luxury tour agency &Beyond, according to company statements. The Kenyan Red Cross stated that search and recovery efforts were hampered by difficult terrain access and an active fire at the crash site. An additional reinforcement team was dispatched from Isiolo to manage the operation, while the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority announced that an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
Identities of Victims and International Impact
Among the victims was Michele Sensi-Contugi, the director general of Ecuador’s intelligence agency, and his wife, fashion designer Stephany Hollihan, according to Ecuadorian authorities. Ecuador’s presidential office offered condolences to Sensi-Contugi’s family in a public statement, while the country’s foreign ministry noted that its embassy in South Africa is coordinating with regional allies because Ecuador lacks a diplomatic mission in Kenya. Hollihan served as the founder and CEO of Sensi Studio, which released a statement mourning her loss. José Suárez, president and general manager of multiple Telemundo-owned stations, was also killed in the crash, according to the American Spanish-language television company. The aircraft involved in the crash was a Eurocopter EC130 B4, currently known as the Airbus H130, according to aviation tracking details. The single-engine helicopter features a maximum speed of approximately 178 mph (286 kph) and a seating capacity of five to seven passengers alongside one pilot.
