UNESCO Launches Observatory on Artificial Intelligence in Education for Latin America and the Caribbean

On April 14, 2026, UNESCO officially launched the Observatory on Artificial Intelligence in Education for Latin America and the Caribbean, a regional initiative designed to support countries in integrating artificial intelligence into their education systems with a focus on equity, quality, and sustainable development.

The launch took place at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile, as part of the 2026 Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development. The event brought together government authorities, experts, representatives of multilateral organizations, academia, the technology sector, and civil society to advance regional cooperation on educational transformation.

Described as the first multi-stakeholder platform of its kind in the region, the Observatory is not intended for passive observation but for coordinated action. It aims to generate contextualized evidence to guide public policies, strengthen teacher training and decision-making processes, and promote classroom-tested innovations under ethical frameworks.

The initiative responds to two pressing regional challenges: the ongoing learning crisis and the rapid adoption of technology in education. By fostering collaboration across sectors, the Observatory seeks to ensure that AI integration in education is both ethical and equitable, addressing disparities while promoting innovation and capacity building.

UNESCO emphasizes that the Observatory will support member states in developing informed, evidence-based approaches to AI in education, aligning technological advancement with broader goals of inclusive and sustainable development.
