Rhoda Torres Celebrates Son’s Release After Year-Long Detention in Venezuela

Venezuelan actress Rhoda Torres has shared the first video with her son, Jonathan Torres, following his release on January 1, 2026, along with 87 other political prisoners as part of a broader release process in Venezuela. Torres had spent months advocating for her son’s freedom through a social media campaign even as he was detained at the El Rodeo II penitentiary center.

A Mother’s Plea

Throughout his detention, Rhoda Torres publicly pleaded for her son’s release. She expressed her hope for his return home before Christmas, stating in a previous publication, “I know that God listens to us and soon the miracle of being able to hug my son will occur. Amen. I trust that he will be with us at Christmas, because the pain of seeing your son behind bars that do not belong to him has been too great.”

The Arrest and Initial Uncertainty

Jonathan Torres returned to Venezuela on October 27, 2024, after residing in the United States for 10 years. He entered the country through the border crossing connecting Venezuela and Colombia. But, he was immediately detained by security agents at a checkpoint, and his whereabouts remained unknown for a significant period. His mother was waiting to receive him in San Antonio del Táchira but was unable to do so.

Challenges with Documentation

According to Rhoda Torres, Jonathan had been unable to renew his identity documents before traveling due to the lack of Venezuelan consular representation in the United States.

Reunion and Gratitude

Approximately two months ago, Rhoda Torres was reunited with her son after more than a year of separation. She recently published a video expressing gratitude to those who supported and shared his case online. “Very grateful to all of you, after a little while, we want to thank everyone for their prayers and love,” the actress said.

Jonathan Torres also extended his thanks, stating, “I wanted to personally thank all the people who supported my case, supported my family, and there is nothing I can do to thank them.”
