Empoli’s ‘Contessa Emilia Award’ to Honor Women with Unique Cameo Brooches

The city of Empoli, Italy, is preparing to host the fifth annual ‘Contessa Emilia Award’ on Sunday, March 8, 2026, celebrating the achievements of women from both the past and present. The award ceremony will grab place at the Cenacolo degli Agostiniani at 6:00 PM.

Symbolic Brooches: A Gift from Alino Mancini

Two precious brooches, now considered symbolic jewels of the event, will be presented to the winning women. These brooches have been crafted by the historic Empoli jewelry and watchmaker, Alino Mancini (via Segantini 1-3). The image on the brooch depicts Countess Emilia, and for this year’s edition, it is rendered in a red cameo, created by Empoli illustrator Camilla Garofalo.

A Public Call for Brooch Creation

The Empoli municipal administration initiated a public notice to identify a creator for the brooches, seeking expressions of interest from jewelers and goldsmiths in the Empoli Valdelsa area.

Recognizing Women’s Impact on Empoli

The ‘Contessa Emilia Award,’ promoted by the Municipality of Empoli and the Equal Opportunities Commission, aims to highlight the significant role women have played and continue to play in society and their contributions to the development of the city. The award seeks to recognize women who, through their work, courage, generosity, dedication, and passion, have shaped the history of Empoli.

The Legacy of Countess Emilia

The brooch’s design is inspired by Countess Emilia, wife of Count Guido Guerra. In December 1119, she signed a deed in Pistoia that allowed individuals and families to settle near the church of Sant’Andrea, effectively marking the birth of Empoli. The image created by Camilla Garofalo depicts a stylized representation of Countess Emilia and the early city of Empoli.

Gratitude and Community Support

Councilor Valentina Torrini expressed gratitude to Alino Mancini for their continued support of the ‘Contessa Emilia Award,’ providing a jewel of great value each year. The president of the Equal Opportunities Commission also thanked Alino and Rossella Mancini for their generous donation of the pins.
