TCL Faces Display Panel Demand Slump Amid Rising Storage Costs
Demand for display panels is experiencing a downturn as shipments of consumer electronics—including smartphones, computers and televisions—decline, driven by surging storage prices despite accelerated product innovation fueled by artificial intelligence. The situation is creating short-term pressures, particularly for smartphone-grade OLED displays, but opportunities exist in large-screen TVs and automotive displays.
Storage Costs Impact Consumer Electronics
“Rising storage prices have dealt a considerable blow to the entire consumer electronics sector,” stated Zhao Jun, Senior Vice President of TCL Technology Group and CEO of TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology as reported by Yicai Global. Prices of dynamic random-access memories (DRAM) have risen to levels comparable with smartphone display panel costs, leading handset manufacturers to reduce their procurement plans.
This reduction is expected to decrease shipments of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays for smartphones to 810 million units in 2026, down from 817 million units in 2025. Small-sized mobile phone panels are expected to be the most affected product category for TCL CSOT.
PC and TV Market Trends
The global personal computer (PC) market is also facing challenges, with projected shipments declining by 5.4 percent in 2026 compared to 2025. This downturn will likely result in a 7.9 percent decrease in display panel deliveries for PCs, although OLED panel shipments are expected to grow although liquid crystal display (LCD) shipments will likely fall.
According to the International Data Corporation, the global PC and smartphone markets are performing worse than previously anticipated. Global PC and smartphone shipments are projected to fall by more than 11 percent and nearly 13 percent, respectively, due to persistent storage supply challenges.
However, the outlook isn’t entirely negative. The 2026 Winter Olympic Games and the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America are anticipated to stimulate demand for larger televisions. Forecasts suggest a 1 to 2 percent increase in TV demand this year, with the total TV screen area projected to grow by more than 3 percent.
TCL CSOT’s Strategic Response
TCL CSOT is actively pursuing novel overseas investment opportunities, including expanding manufacturing bases and supply chains, building on the stable production at its facilities in India and Vietnam as noted by Yicai Global. The company also plans to strengthen its automotive display business in Europe.
At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, display panel manufacturers showcased new technologies and products designed to meet the evolving demands of AI-powered devices, focusing on power consumption, battery life, and low-power technologies as reported by Yahoo Finance.
