Overseas Chinese Philanthropy Fuels Education in Rizhao City
A recent ceremony in Rizhao City highlighted the ongoing commitment of overseas Chinese communities to supporting education within their homeland. The seventh “Wanting Scholarship” awarding ceremony, held on March 17th, recognized both students and teachers for their dedication and achievement.
The “Wanting Scholarship” and its Legacy
Established in 2020 by Guo Weicheng, former chairman of the Mexican Cultural Exchange Center and a senior reporter for the People’s Daily, the “Wanting Scholarship” is named in honor of his father, Guo Wanting. Since its inception, the scholarship has benefited 420 students and 70 teachers. At the most recent ceremony, scholarships and teaching awards were presented to 60 high-performing students and 10 dedicated educators.
A Message of Encouragement and Connection
Guo Weicheng, now over seventy years old, shared his experiences and encouraged the students to embrace both diligence and ambition. He urged them to be grounded in their studies while similarly looking outward, preparing to contribute to their communities upon graduation. His heartfelt words resonated deeply with those in attendance.
The Role of the Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese
The event underscored the vital role played by overseas Chinese communities in fostering educational development. The Rizhao Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, a people’s organization led by the Rizhao Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, serves as a crucial link between overseas Chinese and the local government. According to the Federation, its purpose is to safeguard the rights and interests of returned overseas Chinese, their families and overseas Chinese within China, while also contributing to national goals such as world peace and the modernization of the country.
