Bareskrim Investigates Allegations of Sexual Abuse Against Former Indonesian Rock Climbing Coach

Jakarta – The Indonesian National Police’s General Criminal Investigation Directorate (Bareskrim) is investigating allegations of sexual violence against a former head coach of the Indonesian rock climbing national team, identified only by his initials HB. The alleged offenses reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2025.

Investigation Details

Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation of Women and Children Protection (PPA) and Trafficking in Persons (PPO) at Bareskrim Polri have questioned six victims – identified by the initials PJ, RS, PL, KA, NA, and AV – accompanied by their attorney, SD. The alleged sexual violence took place at the Bekasi Athlete Dormitory and during international competitions.

“The reported incidents are thought to have occurred from 2021 to 2025, especially at the Bekasi Athlete Dormitory on Jalan Harapan Indah Boulevard, Medan Satria, North Bekasi, as well as in several countries when athletes took part in international matches,” stated Brigadier General Nurul Azizah, Director of PPA-PPO Crimes at Bareskrim Polri, in a written statement on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Modus Operandi and Current Status

Preliminary investigations suggest HB abused his authority as head coach to exploit the vulnerability of female athletes. The alleged acts include obscene acts and sexual intercourse. HB has been dismissed from his position by the Indonesian Rock Climbing Federation (FPTI).

Investigators have conducted forensic examinations on victim PJ at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital. Requests for forensic examinations and psychiatric evaluations have similarly been submitted for the other athletes (RS, PL, KA, NA, and AV) at the same hospital.

Evidence and Legal Ramifications

Authorities have confiscated initial reports of alleged sexual harassment from FPTI, as well as identity documents and WhatsApp conversations between the female athletes and HB.

HB is suspected of violating Article 6 letters B and C of Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Crimes of Sexual Violence, in conjunction with Article 15 of the same law, which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to IDR 300 million.
