A State-Sponsored Stabbing in Wimbledon
A London judge on Friday sentenced two Romanian men to a combined 20 years in prison for the March 2024 stabbing of journalist Pouria Zeraati. Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb ruled the attack was carried out on behalf of the Iranian state.
The Old Bailey Verdict
At the Old Bailey, George Stana, 25, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while 21-year-old Nandito Badea received an eight-year term. The pair targeted Zeraati, a journalist for Iran International TV, stabbing him three times in the upper leg.

The court’s findings were stark. "The evidence overwhelmingly supports, in my view, the conclusion that the attack was carried out in the interests of, and on behalf of, the Iranian state," Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb stated. Investigators found that Zeraati had been under surveillance for more than a year, with the operation’s expenses covered by transfers from an account linked to a British-Iranian man.
Proxies and Tehran’s Wanted List
The assault reflects a broader shift in how foreign states project power within the UK. Chief Superintendent Kris Wright, head of Protective Security Operations for Counter Terrorism Policing London, confirmed that police have observed an increasing use of proxies to execute "illegal activity and attacks."
The danger is systemic. MI5 director-general Sir Ken McCallum reported in October that there had been more than 20 Iran-backed plots in the UK over the preceding year. During the trial, evidence surfaced showing images of Zeraati and other overseas-based opposition-aligned journalists circulating in Tehran with the chilling caption, "Wanted: dead or alive."
The Cost to Media Freedom
For Zeraati, the consequences were life-altering. In a victim impact statement, he described the incident as a source of "considerable pain" that affected his confidence and ability to work as a journalist. He and his family have since relocated to another country.
Iran International TV welcomed the court’s decision. "The involvement of the Islamic republic in instigating the attack was accepted by the court," the organization said in a statement.
Fast-Tracking Anti-Proxy Legislation
The UK government is responding with new legal measures to counter foreign interference. Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle condemned the stabbing as an "abhorrent attack."

"We take the threat from Iran extremely seriously, and we will continue to hold the regime to account," Eagle said. "We are fast-tracking legislation to introduce new proscription-like powers to clamp down on state-linked organisations and those who act as their proxies carrying out exactly this sort of activity."
