The 27-year-old Uruguay international arrives at Anfield to bolster Andoni Iraola’s defensive options following the departure of Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free transfer.
Deal Structure and Financial Terms
According to The Athletic, the Merseyside club hold an option to make the move permanent for €55 million (£47.1m; $63.6m). Liverpool have not paid a loan fee to Barcelona, but they will cover all of Araujo’s wages. To facilitate the transfer, the defender took a pay cut, as reported by The Athletic. Araujo is under contract at the Camp Nou until 2031, but he started only 11 league matches last season as Barcelona claimed their 29th Spanish title.
Background and Career at Barcelona
During his time at the club, he has won three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. Spanish football commentator Alvaro Romeo told BBC Radio 5 Live that three years ago, Araujo was “a colossus” during Barcelona’s title-winning campaign, describing him as “phenomenal in defence and the best defender in La Liga by far.” However, Romeo noted that subsequent injuries and lapses in concentration affected his consistency.
Defensive Reinforcements at Anfield
Liverpool pursued the transfer to address depth issues in their backline. Head coach Andoni Iraola previously noted that the team were short on defensive options. Beyond Konate’s departure, Giovanni Leoni remains sidelined after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in September, while Joe Gomez missed the start of the campaign due to a pre-season muscular issue. French defender Jeremy Jacquet also joined Liverpool this summer from Rennes, though his integration has been delayed by shoulder and knee problems.

“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history,” Araujo told Liverpool FC. “It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.”
Araujo underwent a medical on Sunday and is expected to join team training this week. Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign away at Newcastle United on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
