Cristiano Ronaldo Reaffirms Commitment to Al Nassr Amidst Saudi Pro League Dominance
Cristiano Ronaldo has emphatically stated his commitment to Al Nassr, dismissing speculation about a potential departure from the Saudi Pro League. The 41-year-old forward’s declaration comes after a period of reported discontent regarding the club’s transfer activity and a brief absence from recent matches.
Recent Dispute and Return to Form
Ronaldo missed Al Nassr’s victories against Al-Riyadh on February 2nd and Al-Ittihad on February 6th, reportedly due to frustration over a perceived lack of investment in the squad during the January transfer window. Sources indicated he was unhappy that the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) prioritized bolstering rivals Al-Hilal with players like Karim Benzema [ESPN].
Yet, Ronaldo returned to action with a goal against Al-Fateh on February 14th and followed up with a brace in a 4-0 rout of Al-Hazem on February 22nd, propelling Al Nassr to the top of the Saudi Pro League standings [BBC Sport].
“I Belong to Saudi Arabia”
Speaking to Saudi broadcaster Thmanyah after the win against Al-Hazem, Ronaldo unequivocally expressed his happiness and desire to remain in Saudi Arabia. “I’m very happy,” he said. “As I say so many times, I belong to Saudi Arabia. It’s a country that welcomes very well to me, to my family and friends. I’m happy here, I want to continue here.” [ESPN]
He emphasized the team’s focus on securing the league title, stating, “The most important is we keep pushing, we’re there at the top… We do our job, we win, make pressure and let’s see at the finish of the season.”
Resolution with PIF and Contract Details
Ronaldo’s return to the team followed the resolution of his key demands with the PIF. These included the restoration of management authority to club executives Simão Coutinho and José Semedo, as well as the payment of overdue salaries [ESPN].
Having signed a two-year contract extension last June, Ronaldo is currently set to play for Al Nassr until the summer of 2027 [ESPN].
Al Nassr’s Current Standing
Al Nassr currently leads the Saudi Pro League with eight consecutive victories, holding a one-point advantage over Al-Hilal after 22 matchdays. The team has also advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League 2, where they will face Al Wasl of the UAE [The Athletic].
