Ronnie O’Sullivan stated that he may have only two more competitive opportunities to secure a record-breaking eighth world championship, according to an interview with the World Snooker Tour. The 50-year-old, who shares the modern-era record of seven world titles with Stephen Hendry, opened his 2026-27 season with a 6-1 victory over Liu Linhao at the Shanghai Masters.
Championship Ambitions and Retirement Warning
According to the World Snooker Tour, O’Sullivan intends to play for another two seasons before reassessing his career in 2028. Currently ranked 12th in the world rankings due to a reduced tournament schedule, O’Sullivan faces the prospect of entering qualification rounds if his ranking drops outside the top 16 for major events. However, the seven-time champion ruled out playing in qualifiers.
“I’m not going to play qualifiers. You won’t be seeing me go down to Barnsley trying to win qualifying matches and all that sort of stuff,” O’Sullivan told the World Snooker Tour. “If that happens, then obviously that’s the end of my career. But hopefully, I can keep going for at least another two seasons.” “If I don’t do it this year or the next, it will definitely never happen.”
Physical Demands and Tournament Performance
O’Sullivan cited the heavy mental concentration required for professional snooker as a primary reason for limiting his timeline, noting that physical fatigue following matches has increased with age. “I’m 50 now and if I play for two hours I then have to lie down for two or three hours. It is very hard for me,” he said.
In his opening match at the Shanghai Masters, O’Sullivan defeated 18-year-old Chinese wild card Liu Linhao 6-1. After Liu responded to the opening frame with a break of 88, O’Sullivan closed out the match with breaks of 73, 71, 75, and 55.
