Rory McIlroy Withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational with Back Injury

Rory McIlroy withdrew from the 2026 Arnold Palmer Invitational before the start of his third round on Saturday, March 7, citing a back injury. McIlroy, who shot a 4-under 68 on Friday, was in contention but ultimately decided to prioritize his health ahead of upcoming major championships.

Injury Details and Withdrawal

McIlroy experienced discomfort in his back while warming up on Saturday morning. “While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back,” McIlroy stated. “As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back. Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw.”

He explained that while he potentially could have played through the injury, the risk of exacerbating it before The Players Championship next week and the Masters Tournament in April led to his decision. He is the reigning champion at both The Players and the Masters.

Recent History and Concerns

This marks McIlroy’s first withdrawal from an event in 13 years, with the last occurring at the 2013 Honda Classic. Back injuries are a common concern for golfers, and any discomfort can raise alarm given the physical demands of the sport.

Looking Ahead

McIlroy was already planning to take Monday off and arrive at TPC Sawgrass on Tuesday in preparation for The Players Championship, with his pre-tournament press conference scheduled for Wednesday, March 11. He will focus on rest and treatment in the hopes of being fully fit for the tournament.
