Darlington, SC – NASCAR Cup Series driver Ross Chastain recently visited the Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT) to engage with students and showcase the diverse career paths within motorsports and agriculture. The visit, which took place ahead of the race weekend at Darlington Raceway, highlighted the importance of skilled trades and provided students with a unique learning opportunity.
Engaging with Future Professionals
Chastain toured various programs at DCIT, including a stop at the school’s greenhouse. He spoke with students about his experiences, both on and off the track, and emphasized the connection between agriculture and racing. “It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was in school myself and going to races as a fan,” Chastain said. “Now I want to make myself available for people to learn about our great sport and learn about agriculture. It’s very intentional that we’re standing in front of a greenhouse today—it’s not an accident.”
From Watermelon Farmer to NASCAR Star
As an eighth-generation watermelon farmer, Chastain shared his agricultural knowledge with students in the school’s agriculture pathway. He noted the similarities between the DCIT area and his upbringing in inland Florida, expressing his enthusiasm for seeing students engaged in hands-on learning. “Out here, this feels like our inland Florida area where I grew up,” he commented. “Good to see kids being taught about agriculture and about working with their hands. Excited to gain into the greenhouse, it’s new. They were asking me questions inside. now I have questions for them about the greenhouse.”
